Another diet blog? Really?

Yes really. Why? Well why not? I am soon to be 45, have been overweight most of my life and I'm ready to do something about it. I quit smoking a year ago this month and decided I needed to make another huge life change this month. Lose weight.

That brings us to 2150 calories per day.

When I calculated what I needed to eat to lose the weight I want (a really huge goal of 100lbs) I figured how hard can this be?

I knew the exercising would be hard, I knew it was a huge commitment but who thought eating 5 meals per day every 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 hrs and totaling 2150 calories could be so hard?

I thought the eating would be the easy part.

Boy was I wrong.

So join me as I attempt my huge undertaking. Some days I'll succeed, some days I know I will fail then have to pick myself up and start again. But with this blog I hope to bring a smile to some faces with my odd sense of humor and I'm sure there will be a tear here and there as well.

If the exercise doesn't kill me (bodyweight training) the 2150 calories certainly will.

People watching and the Post Office

“Some people are like Slinkies - not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.” - Author Unknown

We all have enjoyed an activity called ‘people watching’ at least a time or two. Some people will admit to people watching and some won’t although we all know everyone does it.

Most of the time we people watch while we are waiting for something or someone. Although there are times when we will just go out for the sole purpose of people watching. Now the results of people watching are very much location dependant. Each location will provide different types of people and different activities or actions for you to enjoy. The locations are endless:

Outside your workplace
Inside your workplace (although I think the boss gets mad when you spend more time watching others than doing what he is paying you to for)
Parks
Playgrounds (but be careful here, moms are really cautious these days if they see someone watching junior too long. Try to keep the people watching to adults please)
Grocery Store
Mall (the food court is the best place in the mall for this but really anywhere will provide good entertainment)
Your own neighborhood
The DMV (takes a real close second place only because you only go there one time a year but it’s always entertaining)

But the best place possible for this activity known as people watching without a doubt is…….

The US Post Office.

Now it doesn’t matter where this post office is located you will have a good time no matter what. I realized this was the best place only recently as I waited in line at my local post office. Next time you go don’t just run in and run out. Take 5 minutes to just look around you and you will see what I mean.

You will see:
The person who talks to nobody in general

The person who has no clue about how to use the automated machine but won’t admit it. If you offer to help they will say they don’t need it yet they can’t see where the large label (that is at least 5’x7’) has spit out of the machine right in front of them

The person who makes a special trip to check their post office box, the one they keep for no reason what-so-ever except to make themselves feel important. Trust me you will know them when you see them. They are usually the ones who are throwing out the junk mail from their box and keeping nothing because they don’t get anything but junk. The bills and such come to the house.

The person who instead of stopping at the mailbox outside (the one they have to drive right past in order to get out of the parking lot) will come inside just to drop an already stamped envelope into the mailbox.

The person who comes in with a box, and all the stuff to go in it but it isn’t in the box it’s in a bag and they have no idea how to package the stuff, have no tape, no labels filled out, etc so the guy at the counter has to take 20 min to help them do what should have been done before they came to the post office.

The man who is angry because he has a pickup slip from the mailman for a package he wasn’t there to receive. Trouble is, it clearly states the package won’t be at the post office till tomorrow. The mailman just left that slip for him 20 min ago and his package is still on the mail truck. He is angry because the post office is inept because he has the slip but they don’t have his package (this guy was priceless) and then he stormed off

The people in line talking to others in line and they think they are whispering but you can hear them all over the lobby. These people are usually little old ladies but not always.

The possibilities for people watching anywhere are endless but for my money nothing beats the post office for entertainment value alone.

The US Postal Service may not always get the mail to you in a timely fashion and you might not like the price increases but damned if they don’t have great entertainment.

Don’t tell them though, they will want to start charging for it.

It's getting colder and we all know what that means

“Yesterday I was a dog. Today I'm a dog. Tomorrow I'll probably still be a dog. Sigh! There's so little hope for advancement.” - Charles M. Schulz

Yes kids winter seems to be just around the corner. My little corner of heaven is south of a lot of the cold yet not the tropics of Florida. My point is that I usually wear shorts....as long as possible.....really.

The other day it was downright chilly and I couldn't wear shorts as much as I wanted to. I had gone out the day before and it was cool (to my northern bred blood) but I still had shorts on while everyone around me was bundled up. But on this day I couldn't do shorts. This tells me that winter is approaching and do you know what that means?

JEANS!!!! Urgh, I hate wearing long pants be they jeans or dress slacks. I have been spoiled by shorts too long I know it but I just feel so restricted in jeans. After I wear them for awhile I get used to them again but....sigh, I guess I have to accept it.

Ok so I go to my closet and grab a pair of jeans. They are an older pair (my favorite of course) and normally they are tight when I first put them on and have to stretch them out a bit.

Come on kids, admit it, we all have to do this to at least one pair....right?

So I put them on and there is no need to stretch them. They fit perfectly. Huh? How did this happen?

Oh yes, that diet thing, the reason we are all here. So I seem to be doing good even if the scale isn't sharing that info.

I had heard from another source that you can't always count on the scale but your clothes you can trust. And I guess that makes sense because the scale isn't seeing inches it is just reading weight.

Long story short (I know, too late right?) I lost enough so that my favorite jeans fit perfectly. Yipee. Good news for me.

Forrest Gump Is Right --- Stupid Is As Stupid Does

“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe.” - Albert Einstein

Have you noticed that people are getting more stupid every day just go outside and watch them, read the paper or watch the news. Why is this happening? I’ll tell you why. It’s because somewhere down the line people decided that they no longer needed to take responsibility for their own actions.
Why? Well I don’t know the reason as fact so I won’t give my personal opinion.

Ok back to the subject of stupid people. Here are some examples:

*A woman goes to McDonald’s to buy a cup of hot coffee (hot is the keyword here) and when she drives away she places said cup of hot coffee between her legs on the seat and hits a bump and it spills all over her. Now she sues McDonald’s. Who is at fault? Could the fine folks at McDonald’s know she was going to do something so asinine as this and warned her? Come on, would you really place a HOT cup of coffee that is in a paper cup in-between your legs while driving? Hmmmm? Oh by the way, for those of you who are just coming out from under a rock, she sued McDonald’s and was awarded $2.86 million dollars by a jury and the judge reduced that amount to $640,000 and that was settled for a somewhat reduced amount out of court.

*The case of a Washington, D.C. judge, who sued a dry cleaning business for $67 million (later lowered to $54 million), the dry cleaners lost his pants (which he brought in for a $10.50 alteration) and refused his demands for a large refund. He believed that a 'Satisfaction Guaranteed' sign in the window of the shop legally entitled him to a refund for the cost of the pants, estimated at $1,000. The $54 million total also included $2 million in "mental distress" and $15,000 which he estimated to be the cost of renting a car every weekend to go to another dry cleaners.

*Google Maps' walking directions told Lauren Rosenberg to walk along a busy Utah highway with no sidewalk, and so she did—and was hit by a car in the process. Now Rosenberg is suing Google for more than $100,000 because it didn't warn her that the route was not pedestrian friendly. Google Maps actually does provide a warning to this effect on its website, but the BlackBerry version, which Rosenberg used, does not.

Now what stupid idiot walks on the highway just because someone (in this case Google Maps) told her to?

Remember your mother saying “If everyone jumped off a bridge would you do it too?” Come on people where is common sense? Where is their personal responsibility? It isn’t their fault, no of course it’s not. It’s always someone else’s fault.

Here are a few more goodies to make my point.

A lawyer who left his favorite leather coat (that he paid $800 for) in the food court of the Houston airport when he got on his flight to Las Vegas. Well of course the coat is gone and he is going to sue the airport, Continental Airlines and the company that manages the food court. Why? Because he has “diligently attempted to figure out who was responsible for collecting the coat and contends that party should have kept it in a secure place for a reasonable period of time”.

Well guess what Mr. Dumb-as-a-rock Lawyer, I never went to law school but even I know who the who was responsible for collecting the coat. It is you moron! Look in the mirror and you will find the person responsible.

Geez when was the last time your mother cleaned up after you? If I had an $800 coat (and let me tell you I’m not cheap but no coat is worth $800) I would keep track of where it was. And if he travels often then he should know better.

Now do you see what I mean by stupid people? I have one more example from today’s news.

*2 doctors were playing golf in New York. One was off to the side in the rough and the other hit his ball but it was such a bad shot it somehow hit the guy in the rough in the eye and blinded him. Yes it was a freak accident but why, you ask is he suing his “friend”?

If you were paying attention kids you should have known there was a lawsuit coming.

He is suing because the guy who hit the ball didn’t yell ‘Fore”. Now they are playing with 3 people total and last time I played golf I stood to the side while someone else hit the ball and never, ever have I heard the word “Fore” being yelled at anyone at anytime.

So the “friendship” is over I guess (lawsuits tend to do that) but is it really the guys fault who hit the ball? Isn’t the non hitting golfer responsible as well? Shouldn’t he be aware of his surroundings especially when playing a game where balls are being hit long distances by metal clubs!?

Come on people wake up!

The only person responsible for you is you.

If you rob a bank, you are to blame. Not PMS or the baby that wouldn’t stop crying or the post office because they kept putting mail in your box that wasn’t yours.

If you rear end someone it is your fault because you weren’t paying attention while you were putting on your makeup, downloading something on iTunes, checking your email and talking to your BFF.

I think you get my point. Once you hit 18 years of age my friends, nobody is legally and morally responsible for you but you. Let’s try to remember that in the future. And if you still don’t get my point, next time you buy something look at the warning label that is attached. You know the one on the hair dryer that warns you not to use it while in the tub, or the ladder that tells you not to climb on the side that doesn’t have steps on it. Those warning labels. Oh yeah and don’t forget to thank the lady that sued McDonald’s over the coffee next time you get coffee anywhere. Look at the newest warning label on the lid. “Warning: Contents May Be Hot”.

‘nuff said.

so I didn't eat much today. That can be a double edged sword. I don't eat cause I'm not feeling well and I'm not feeling well so I should be eating. Can't win this one can ya?

Here's hoping tomorrow is a better day. I'm not happy that I have fallen back into the bad habit of skipping meals either but that's for a day when I feel better.

Writing with actual words, what a concept

“County library? Reference desk, please. Hello? Yes, I need a word definition. Well, that's the problem. I don't know how to spell it and I'm not allowed to say it. Could you just rattle off all the swear words you know and I'll stop you when...Hello?” - Calvin & Hobbes by Bill Watterson

Spelling. It seems to be a lost art these days. Everyone is so busy texting and wanting to not get carpel thumb that they shorten all the words.

U NO WAT I MEAN? or KWIM?

It's called SMS language or Textese (also known as txtese, chatspeak, txt, txtspk, txtk, txto, texting language, or txt talk).

For words which have no common abbreviation, users most commonly remove the vowels from a word, and the reader is required to interpret a string of consonants by re-adding the vowels (e.g. dictionary becomes dctnry and keyboard becomes kybrd).

The reader must interpret the abbreviated words depending on the context in which it is used, as there are many examples of words or phrases which use the same abbreviations (e.g., lol could mean laugh out loud or lots of love, and cryn could mean crayon or cryin(g)).

Context is key when interpreting textese, and it is precisely this shortfall which critics cite as a reason not to use it

That is NOT how we write emails, online profiles, actual correspondence, etc. The sad thing is that I know teachers who get assignments back from kids written just like that. And what is their excuse? No kid actually writes with pen and paper (don't get me started on penmanship) they use their computer. And every computer I have ever seen has something called "spell check" which also, conveniently corrects grammar as well.

So by the fact that they write on the computer, and have the option of using spell check there should be no misspellings ever really. Unless of course they are using that new made up text language.

Now why don't they use spell check? It's one click for crying out loud. But then again they are probably exhausted from ROTF, LOL and LMAO

This is what we have to look forward to in the future. Letters from the Social Security Office, or the doctor's office telling us about R NEW SRVC Y NOT TRY IT
2DAY. 4 MOR INF TXT US. K?

Lessons In Friendship

“A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.” - Author Unkown

I know I seem to be talking about my friends a lot lately but stay with me here. Today I'm going to tell you a story about someone who claims to be a friend yet doesn't know nor understand the meaning of the word.

This person, I'll call Martha, lives in her own little world. Remember yesterday when we discussed narcissism? Well that is Martha in spades. But not only is she a narcissist, she is a manipulator of her ‘friends’ and that people is what really gets me fired up.

I have a brother who likes to drink and he is also a manipulator so I’m familiar with the type. Martha though seems to have a unique approach. A year ago you would have thought she was at death’s door. Yes she was ill, yes she couldn’t keep weight on, yes there were some issues. Were they as bad as she claimed? I don’t think so. According to her today she is healed.

Call the Pope a miracle has occurred!

Now, she has gained weight and all her disease and life threatening infections are gone. It’s just plain amazing.

Now why am I being so sarcastic and hurtful to someone so ill? Well because she manipulated people I care about into dropping everything to run her around, take her to the grocery store, doctors visits (some of them quite a great distance), ER runs in the late evenings, etc.

Now when she did this she didn’t care what time it was or what was going on in the lives of those people she was interrupting. Yes as a friend those people dropped everything and helped Martha. But at what cost? Well they thought they were being a good and true friend. How did Martha repay them? By shutting them out of her life, telling them that they are not friends and don’t care about her, etc and to not bother poor Martha again.

Well sorry Martha but friendship is a two way street. But let’s not forget that pesky narcissism, it allows Martha to be ok with the fact that she uses her friends and then runs them off when she either can’t manipulate them or their usefulness has expired.

Sad isn’t it? Because not only has she run away friends she has also alienated family which we always thought was odd but to hear Martha tell the tale she is the victim. My brother has that same problem, he is never wrong he is always the wronged party.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all blame our issues on others?

My friend who Martha recently told off in no uncertain terms was dumbfounded at first and then in the replay of events she realized how badly she had been manipulated by Martha. And then she said something I thought was funny. It bothered her because she “never had a friend "break-up" with me before!”

The point I’m trying to make and one we can all try to remember is that friendship is as I said before a two-way street. If you don’t want to be someone’s friend, fine don’t go there in the first place. But don’t pretend you are a friend and when you call on people and they don’t drop everything in their world and rush out to help you in record time you drop them like a hot potato. Friends care about each other equally. It’s a give and take.

Give and take, 50/50 no more no less should be required.

So Martha has one less friend in this world. Pity too seeing she is only alienating herself and will end up alone or possibly the crazy cat lady all the kids are afraid of. Hey, you know what? I guess the crazy cat lady has to come from somewhere right?

Here kitty kitty………

Talking but nobody is listening

“My life has no purpose, no direction, no aim, no meaning, and yet I'm happy. I can't figure it out. What am I doing right?” - Charles M. Schulz

I hate talking when people don't listen. Why bother right? One of my dogs doesn't listen to me when I tell him not to dig but hey, he's a dog. He couldn't get into the English as a second language class but I love him anyway.

People don't have that excuse unless of course they really don't speak English but around here that really shouldn't be an issue.

You can talk to people and have to repeat yourself so many different ways because the person who is supposed to care about what you say isn't paying attention. Oh yeah it's called narcissism.

Yeah that's where the other person cares about him/her self more than you. And that's fine to a point. Don't we all really care about ourselves first and foremost? But when others begin to not matter anymore that's when you've got yourself an issue.

For a person to think the world revolves around them is just wrong. We all know someone like this don't we? They might think their jokes are the funniest, or their presentation was the best but there are people out there who truly think they are better than others.

Now a narcissist won't admit they have this issue but we all see it. It's a matter of putting up with it or not. I, for one, don't think we should have to do this. Selfish? No I don't think so. Why should we have to stop our worlds to jump into their world every time we want to talk to them?

Why do we continually walk on eggshells for these people? If they are friends they should be just that. Friends. If they are co-workers, ok we can put up with them 8hrs a day.

I guess the key here is how important are they in our lives and how much work are they to keep as the friends they are supposed to be?

Friendship is something that is (or should be) given freely. But it's also give and take just like any other relationship we all deal with on a daily basis.

My point is, if someone you say you care about talks to you, listen. That's all a friend has to do. You don't have to solve all the world’s problems, just listen with no ulterior motives except caring for them.

It will make you a better friend, and a better person.

Power Given Is Power Taken

“He who controls others may be powerful, but he who has mastered himself is mightier still” - Lao Tzu

Why do we give people power over us? And I mean give. People wouldn't have any power over us unless we give it. We don't always knowingly give away this power but we do it all the same.

Your boss has power because you have given it to him freely because he is your boss and can tell you what to do and say and think (at least from 8a-5p).

Friends sometimes take that power from you and you either gave it to them or didn't realize it until it was too late.

My friend is a good friend (but not a wonderful friend like the one I mentioned the other day) and I think the reason he took the power in our relationship is because that's his personality. And I let it happen. Only now am I realizing the power I have given him. He calls and I answer, he talks and I listen, he asks what I did today and I don't tell him because I don't feel it's that exciting really (and I'm actually a very private person). We can spend a whole conversation with me saying very little which I hate but again I don't say anything so it is my own fault.

He needs to realize that what is important to him may not be important to others. Just like what is important to me may not be important to him. But because of this thing called friendship we should care about what the other finds important or interesting. If he isn't interested in it, he doesn't want to hear about it. And being an only child this is how he was raised, as the center of attention which is part of the problem I guess.

He even has no clue that he and his partner missed my birthday which shouldn't bother me too much cause my schmuck brother couldn't be bothered either. Although I expect it from my schmuck brother.

Why am I blogging all this if I am such a private person? I DON'T KNOW!! How's that for an answer.

I really have made great strides in changing as far as letting people walk all over me. And I know if there was a problem that this friend and his partner would be right there. They have proven that to me. I just need to somehow recapture the power in this relationship and I don't know how to do it.

Oy, relationships are a bitch aren't they? Friendships, co-workers, lovers, husbands/wives, it doesn't matter what kind it is. Someone holds the power in each and every relationship unless you are one of the lucky few that holds only half the power as should be the case in your marriage, or other romantic relationship you might be in.

Nobody should have too much power over you because you are the important one in your life, yes others are important but it is our life so we should be the star!

So tomorrow when that one friend calls (and we all have one, let's be honest) and says 'go turn on channel XYZ you have to see this' but you are reading or watching something else that you have waited weeks for or are spending time with your family, tell him/her you can't. You are doing something else at the moment.

Will they be mad? Yes but you know what? It's ok for people to be mad at you. I am slowly learning this fact. I hate for people to be mad at me but I can't control the rotation of their world. All I can do it be who I am and if that hurts their feelings then so be it. I take no ownership of their feelings, I only control my own.

So when they get mad at you and don't call you for a couple days. It's ok. Your life will go on and if it was that important to them then they either get over it or they don't. Again not your problem.

It's one thing to want to please friends and family, it's another to feel the need to do it. Please yourself people. If you are happy with yourself then those that love you will be happy as well.

You can't love others until you love yourself, hell you can't like others until you like yourself.

Ok stepping off today's soapbox. Thanks for listening.

Offical Cheat Day

Today is an official cheat day. Why? Well I thought I needed a break from the counting and maybe now tomorrow it will be fresher for me. I don't want to get bored or lax with the food journal (or worse yet quit doing it) so an occasional cheat day is not a bad thing.

Besides, I can't eat enough on my normal days, what makes anyone think I'm going to go hog wild on my cheat day?

11/6 update

My bad I failed to update this on Saturday so here goes.

Weigh in wasn't a loss or a gain so that's ok.

Started using my protein powder. Tried it with water and it's ok but kind of well watery so I thought I would add it to chocolate milk instead. It's better that way, less watery for lack of better description, and I obviously need the calories as well seeing as I can't eat like I'm supposed to.
I still need to learn to add more protein into my day but baby steps here.

Stop planning and start enjoying the moments

“If people are truly, madly, deeply in love with each other, they will find a way.” - Author Unknown

I note that quote for a wonderful friend who thinks that as time ticks on in our lives we need to have a plan. Time is ticking and we only have so much time on this earth so we need to use it the best way possible.

I understand why she feels that way, she has gone through a lot in the last couple of years and suffered the greatest loss there is, her spouse. Now I don't say that to invoke bad memories for her or anyone else reading this but I say it so we understand why she feels the way she does.

Now that being said, She is of the mindset that she needs to know where her new relationship and her life is heading, time is ticking, not getting any younger and all that you know. Well I say this.

STOP!

Yes you heard me, stop.

Stop and listen to your heart, smell the flowers that line the walk at your office, listen to the children playing, listen to the whispers of your angels.

Time will continue ticking if we have a plan or not. We all want to use our time on earth to the best of our ability but if we plan it we will miss the best parts. The surprises in life. Yes some are a pain in the ass like flat tires on the car when we are already late for work but some of them can be wonderful.

That puppy that wondered into your life unexpectedly, the $20 bill you found in your winter coat pocket that you had forgotten all about, the bird's nest that now holds a family of five, the smile on your child's face because you were there to see them make the winning goal, your boyfriend who calls you for no reason other than to say that he loves you or the smile from the little old lady when you held the door at the post office for her even though she walked slowly and you had to wait, thereby taking some of your precious ticks and realizing that you aren't wasting your time you are enjoying life.

All of those things are wonderful but they can't be planned. Life moves so fast these days that we don't take the time to enjoy life anymore. You can't plan for life you just have to take it as it comes. Be it good or bad.

Minute by minute, tick by tick. Life is there for us to enjoy and savor. Make memories for ourselves and our loved ones. Every day is a do-over, as is every single minute of our lives. If we mess up, there is always the next minute, hour or day to make it up and have a do-over.

Although we want to do as much with our time as we can the purpose of our time on earth is to be happy.

An Irish saying really fits here: May your past be a pleasant memory, your future filled with delight and mystery, and your now a glorious moment that fills your life with deep contentment.

So live, laugh, love but most of all, remember to be happy.

Boring day but still going strong

“You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there.” - Yogi Berra

If nothing else I am a determined person. Some people would be disheartened by the lack of success in eating what they were supposed to but I am not one of those people.

If I am learning something new I read, and learn and stick with it because I'll be damned if I am not going to win at this stupid diet thing.

I am losing weight so it is not a loss I just think I can do better if I get this eating thing in line.

So there you go. I will not give up. I started this and I will continue down this path with good days and bad but I will not give up.

Lapsing into old habits

“Courage is the discovery that you may not win, and trying when you know you can lose.” -Tom Krause

I have GOT to stop missing meals. Damn it! I do that and then have to cram as much as I can into a few meals/snacks and that is NOT the way this is supposed to work. I'm telling you just the thought of eating makes me cringe cause I have to eat, then a few hours later eat again and I'm not hungry. OY! It's hard work.

And my lack of eating is reflected in my numbers.

Learning the glycemic index

"A good friend will come bail you out of jail, but a true friend will be sitting next to you saying...'Damn, that was fun!'” - Author Unkown

The glycemic index is not easy to master either. I haven't found the reasoning behind why some things are high on the list. For example: Watermelon is high on the list at 75 (high is 70+). A can of coke is 63 and that's all sugar! I don't get it. I was always told watermelon is good for you.

Oh wait kids, I just looked it up and wouldn't you know it? Watermelon is one of those 'exceptions to the rule'. Dont' you love those?

That's because, as with any rule, there are exceptions to the fairly consistent physiological rules that underlie the glycemic index. For instance, watermelon has a pretty high glycemic index, about 75, which is even higher than table sugar. Does that make it bad for you? No. Because in spite of its high index, watermelon actually has a pretty low glycemic load. That's a measure based on the amount of food you'd actually consume, not just an arbitrary quantity used in testing, as with the index.

Ugh! Why don't they teach us this stuff when we are young? It's like learning a second language and trust me at my age that isn't easy.

Ok so more to learn on this GI thing.

This really is a learning curve

“Being happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect. It means that you've decided to look beyond the imperfections.” - Author Unknown

I have decided to add 'glycemic index' numbers to my food journal as it has a blank column. What I need to find now is a larger listing of foods so I don't have to keep going online to find where something falls in the glycemic index. I have a listing but of course I don't think it is complete.

I guess I'll give it a couple days using that list and see if I find a lot of missing items and have to go elsewhere.

Maybe keeping track of the glycemic index numbers will be easier than eating 2150 calories. Ha! right?
